Maintaining commitment to a weight loss strategy is a challenge for many. In the beginning, we are optimistic about realizing our goals, and achieving them seems easy. Then, your motivation takes a hit and you just do not feel like you want to do this anymore and feel like you want to give up. It does not happen to everyone, though. There are many people who lose the weight and keep the weight off. What is their secret to this success?
Before you start any weight loss program, determine how many pounds you want to lose. Do you just want to shave off those few extra pounds you gained over the holidays, or do you want to fit into clothing that is a size or two smaller than what you currently wear? It even helps to write down your reasons for wanting to be thinner. Know whether your exercise goal is as simple as having higher energy levels, or if you want to fit into smaller clothing.
Be sure to keep track of the progress you are making each week. Create a journal and check your weight weekly. Within the journal, create a food log to keep track of all the food you eat each day. Writing down what you are eating will help you remember to make healthier choices.
If you are too hungry, your ability to make good choices will be reduced and will cause you to eat potentially unhealthy items. Therefore, it is best to plan each meal in advance. Prepare lunch in advance rather than eating junk food on the go. You will save lots of money and get a better quality of food. The food you prepare for yourself will have far less fat, sodium and calories than anything you could buy at a restaurant or fast food eatery.
A big part of successful weight loss is combining healthy eating with consistent exercise. It is important that you exercise three times a week or more. If you cannot commit to exercising, then pick an activity that you can stick with for the long term. If you like having long conversations with your friends, you can go with them for a walk. Short hikes on a nature trail or even just a walk through the neighborhood park can satisfy your thirst for the great outdoors and get you some exercise! If you love to dance, why not give a dance class a whirl and practice some new steps.
You shouldn't bring foods into the house that you won't be able to eat. At first that might be a shock to your family, but guess what? If it's not good for you to eat, chances are it's not good for them to eat either. Make sure your cupboards and fridge are filled with healthy food choices your whole family can enjoy. This doesn't mean you have to go without snacks! Both adults and kids will benefit from eating fruit. Granola is another good choice, among many other options.
When you are trying to lose weight, it's very important for you to have people around who support you. Support from family and friends can make all the difference. Having a support group, or even just one trusted ally, that you can call on during trying times, can help tremendously.
