It can be difficult to stick to a weight loss plan. In the beginning, it is easy to stick to your goals. After a while, your motivation wanes and you cannot push through in your workouts like you used to be able to do. Many people, however, fail to experience this frustration. People do succeed in losing weight and keep it off for years. How do they manage to accomplish that?
Figuring out your weight loss goals and setting a number for how much weight you want to lose comes first. Do you just want to shave off those few extra pounds you gained over the holidays, or do you want to fit into clothing that is a size or two smaller than what you currently wear? Figure out why losing weight is important to you. Do you want to drop a dress size? To reach a specific weight goal? Or maybe you just want to improve your health and energy levels?
Keep and ongoing record of your weight loss progress. Don't get on the scale more than one time a week. Weighing yourself every day or more than once a week can contribute to anxiety if you are not seeing results. Also make a diary of all of the foods you eat daily and an estimate of the calories you take in. Remember to keep a note of any drinks and snacks that you consume. This can sometimes keep you from making bad decisions when choosing what you are going to eat and drink.
It is way too easy to make fast, but poor, food selections when you feel as if you're starving. At that point the only thing you care about is eating quickly, even if it is junk food. To avoid those unnecessary calories, keep a snack reserve if you get hungry and don't skip your regular meals. When you pack your lunch, you do not have the temptation to eat take-out. By doing this you will cut back on calories, and save money too.
A truly great weight loss plan will focus on both diet and exercise. It is important that you take part in workouts that you enjoy a minimum of five times a week. Choosing a workout that you genuinely enjoy can make your exercise time a priority in your schedule instead of something you forget about. Is spending time with your buddies important? Shoot some hoops with them! Are you focused on having a good time? Dance classes may be the way to go. Do you escape life by going out into nature? Hit those hiking trails!
You shouldn't bring foods into the house that you won't be able to eat. At first that might be a shock to your family, but guess what? If it's not good for you to eat, chances are it's not good for them to eat either. Make sure your cupboards and fridge are filled with healthy food choices your whole family can enjoy. However, this doesn't mean you have to suffer from a lack of snack foods. One of the best snacks for both adults and children is fresh fruit. Granola is another healthy snack you can enjoy while on a diet.
Friends can support you in a variety of ways. Although they can't lose the weight for you, they can be invaluable in providing much-needed motivation to keep you going forward. Accountability is important in any long-term weight loss plan, and when you involve a friend or family member, you are more likely to succeed. When you feel like you are not motivated, call a buddy for support. They will help give you the support to allow you to go on.
